Catalyst Committee

In 2011, the Tikkun Olam Women’s Foundation (TOWF) began asking representatives from your and other Greater Washington area congregations, schools, and Jewish institutions about the most pressing challenges facing women and girls in our community.  The message was clear: a glass ceiling limits the advancement of professional and volunteer women working in our Jewish community.

We are now gathering the data we need to respond to this challenge.  TOWF is mapping two of the key policies and practices essential to the advancement of women and men:  paid family leave and flexible work arrangements.  We hope to highlight best practices, and to help local Jewish organizations deepen their understanding of these issues and recognize opportunities for change that will increase organization effectiveness.

We began earlier this year by interviewing 12 local organizations about their work-life policies and procedures. The responses we got from our colleagues at the three area JCCs, seven agencies of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, Jews United for Justice and 6th & I Historic Synagogue inspired us to reach out to the broader community.

This link will take you to a short online survey about your organization’s approach to family leave and flexibility, and unique issues that you may face.  It will take less than 10 minutes to complete this survey.

We are well aware that these issues can be challenging to discuss, and appreciate your willingness to share about your policies and practices.  Even if your organization does not have a formal written policy, we’d like to hear about your “minhag” because informal practices are important, too.  The purpose of the survey is to gather information, not to judge individual organizations.
